Lutein and Zeaxanthin

Total Vision Care^TM uses therapeutic doses of 20 mg of lutein (11.3 mg free lutein) and 2.5 mg of zeaxanthin. Lutein and zeaxanthin are fat soluble nutrients/antioxidants that are naturally found in fat. The fat plays an important role for absorption and stability (maintaining its potency). Total Vision Care^TM uses only lutein and zeaxanthin that are in natural oils, naturally extracted from Marigold (Tagetes erecta). 

The carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin are found in the macula in high concentrations and may play a protective role in the progression of macular degeneration. Lutein and Zeaxanthin protect the macula and photoreceptor outer segments throughout the retina from oxidative stress and play a role in reducing the impact of reactive oxygen species, as well as acting as a blue light filter. Although lutein and zeaxanthin are not essential nutrients, studies are beginning to suggest that they fit the criteria for conditionally essential nutrients.

Alpha Lipoic Acid

Alpha Lipoic Acid  is a potent antioxidant that may protect the lens and the retina from free radical damage and reduce the risk of cataract development. Alpha Lipoic Acid increases glutathione levels by enhancing the recycling of vitamin C and vitamin E, reducing the burden on glutathione. Glutathione protects the lens of the eye from UV rays which can cause cataracts.
